Collision statistics at camera sites
We monitor the number of crashes and casualties at camera sites in order to ensure that our enforcement is effective. We also take into consideration any changes in the design of the road layout which may negate the need for enforcement, i.e the introduction of an engineering solution such as traffic calming measures. The table below shows the crash history before enforcement took place and then the crash history after the introduction of cameras.
Some people ask why we continue to enforce at sites where crashes have stopped or significantly reduced. This is because if we were to stop enforcement it is possible that we would start to see vehicle speeds and crash numbers increase again. Similarly, if a 'bend' warning sign and additional road markings were installed as a warning to drivers on a bend with a history of crashes, once the crashes had reduced you wouldn't simply remove the warning sign and road markings.
