About the cameras

FIXED CAMERAS

All of Suffolk's fixed sites are Gatso radar cameras. They are based on a fixed post and housed in highly visible yellow boxes. The Gatso camera measures vehicles travelling in one or both directions as determined by the operator. Gatso cameras can also be used in a mobile capacity from a tripod.

The radar uses a sophisticated targeting system over a narrow beam which measures passing traffic hundreds of times a second. If a vehicle exceeds the prosecution threshold then the camera will be activated. The camera takes two pictures in quick succession so the distance travelled can be seen by examining the markings on the road. This acts as a secondary visual check so speeds can be manually confirmed.

Speed enforcement officers undertake checks to ensure camera warning signs and adequate speed limit signs are in place before and after each period of enforcement.

All the equipment used is approved by the Home Office and each set is calibrated annually to ensure accuracy. In addition to this the camera is tested before and after each session of use by a speed enforcement officer.

MOBILE CAMERA VANS

Mobile safety camera vans in Suffolk operate using a Redflex lasercam nt. The vehicles park at the side of the road and the camera equipment is used either from the rear window, side door of the van or from a temporary tripod.

Speed enforcement officers target the laser at a vehicle that they believe to be exceeding the legal speed limit and thelaser provides an instant reading. This information is digitally encrypted and storedon a worm drive, similar to a DVD. The lasercam is capable of detecting speeds up to 1km away.

Speed enforcement officers undertake checks to ensure camera warning signs and adequate speed limit signs are in place before each period of enforcement.

All the equipment used is approved by the Home Office and is calibrated annually to ensure accuracy. In addition to this the equipment performs self checks every time it is switched on and enforcement officers undertake daily checks. If any problem is detected then the equipment will not allow enforcement to take place.

AVERAGE SPEED CONTROL CAMERAS

Safety cameras that measure average speed have been used in Suffolk on the A14 Orwell Bridge for the duration of maintenance programmes. The cameras ensure compliance with the speed limit for the duration of the speed control zone.

These cameras are mounted on poles over the road at either end of a speed control zone. As vehicles pass between the cameras they are digitally recorded. The time it takes for the vehicle to travel between both points is used to calculate the average speed. If a vehicle exceeds the speed threshold, a speeding violation record is automatically generated.

All the equipment used is approved by the Home Office and is calibrated annually. dition to this the camera is tested before and after each session of use by a speed enforcement officer.
