Save A Life Campaign
'Save A Life' is a road safety campaign aimed at reducing casualties on Suffolk's roads. The Suffolk Roadsafe partnership has linked up with the Evening Star to publicise information, facts and advice for motorists and riders.
The general accident trend over recent years reflects a steady fall in the number of casualties but 2008 has seen a rise in seriously injured road users. By September, 19 people had been killed and 199 seriously injured on the roads of Suffolk. This figure is 28% higher than the same period last year and so the partnership is acting now in order to prevent the numbers rising further.
Accident Analysis
Analysis has revealed that there are five factors which have particularly contributed to this increase. Most of these causes are associated with road traffic offences.
Inappropriate speed.
Not wearing a seat belt.
Use of mobile phone while driving.
Drinking and driving.
Motorcycle crashes.
Ten key routes across the county have been identified where collisions resulted in killed or seriously injured (KSI) motorists and riders. The main thrust of the campaign is to therefore to increase traffic enforcement along these roads through Suffolk Police's "Operation Nucleus".
Operation Nucleus
Operation Nucleus runs from September to December 2008. During this period extra enforcement patrols will target inappropriate driver behaviour and police officers will take a robust stance in dealing with motorists and riders who break the law. This will be supported by extra safety camera activity organised by Safecam.
