What's the deal?
Suffolk County Council is offering to pay £75 towards a Pass Plus course to enable new young drivers to improve their skills.
Why do Pass Plus?
Over a quarter of all fatal and serious road casualties in Suffolk are young drivers - despite the fact that they make up less than one tenth of the population!
Young drivers are more at risk on the roads than other drivers. In the first two years of driving you are far more likely to have a crash than at any other time.
Young drivers' reactions, hearing and eyesight are generally better than older drivers - BUT an inexperienced driver can take up to two seconds longer to react to hazards than a more experienced driver. In that two seconds, at 30 mph a vehicle would have travelled 90 feet!
By improving your driving skills, and particularly your hazard awareness, you can reduce your risk of dying or being seriously injured - that's what Pass Plus is designed to do.
What is Pass Plus?
Pass Plus is a national scheme, which provides training by approved driving instructors.
The scheme encourages young people who have just passed their driving test to undertake six modules of more advanced driving lessons.
These sessions cover:
Driving in town
Driving in all weathers
Driving on rural roads
Driving at night
Driving on dual carriageways
Driving on motorways
There is no test at the end of the course, but drivers must reach a certain standard to be awarded the Pass Plus certificate.
What's the benefit?
Many insurance companies offer discounts of up to 30%* for new drivers with a Pass Plus certificate - which means that, along with the council's £75 grant, Pass Plus could actually save you money!
*Savings from major insurers include: Direct Line 20%; Co-operative Insurance Services (CIS) 25%; Norwich Union 30%; others typically 20 to 30%. Please note that premiums will vary so you need to shop around.
