Pass Plus scheme FAQ's
These are questions about the subsidised Pass Plus scheme currently being operated by Suffolk County Council.
For more general information about Pass Plus log on to the Driving Standards Agency website, http://www.passplus.org.uk/index.asp .
Why are you using public money to subsidise Pass Plus?
Suffolk County Council is funding this pilot scheme targeting young drivers because they are the major cause of fatal and serious casualties in the county. Setting aside the huge emotional cost to family and friends, if we can save just a few serious injury crashes the pilot scheme will pay for itself.
Why aren't you doing anything for other age groups or categories of road users?
We are running a whole range of road safety projects for a wide variety of road users. The road safety team's remit covers publicity, education, School Crossing Patrols and training. We work in co-operation with Suffolk Constabulary, Suffolk Safety Camera Partnership, Suffolk Fire Service and many other local organisations. Look on our website, www.suffolkroadsafe.net, for more information about some of the work we carry out.
Why can't I get the subsidy if I passed my driving test more than a year ago?
Research shows that drivers are at their most vulnerable during their first year of driving - and because of this Pass Plus training is less effective after this point. We are trying to target public money most effectively to reduce casualties in Suffolk.
Why can't I get the subsidy if I'm over 19 years old?
Statistics show a steep rise in casualties in Suffolk from age 17, through 18 and into the 19-year-old age group - but a considerable drop off beyond that point. Again, we are trying to target public money most effectively to reduce casualties in Suffolk.
Why aren't all Approved Driving Instructors (ADIs) part of your Pass Plus subsidy scheme?
We've publicised the scheme to ADIs but not all have indicated that they are interested in delivering Pass Plus - obviously we cannot compel ADIs to take part. Contact details for all the participating ADI's listed on this website. ADIs can volunteer to join the scheme at any point - they simply need to send an email to suffolkroadsafe@et.suffolkcc.gov.uk
I've completed the form but have been excluded from the Pass Plus subsidy - can you tell me why?
Probably because you are not applying within your first year of passing the test, or you are outside the age limit, or you are not living in Suffolk. It is also possible that you may have entered your details incorrectly. If you think you meet all the criteria we suggest you complete the form again - and then ring 0845 606 6067 for further assistance if you are still unsuccessful.
Why do I have to register through the website?
Most young people have access to a web-connected computer and are able to access the web. Libraries have web-enabled computers that young people can use to register by going to www.suffolkroadsafe.net/pass_plus If you are unable to access the web you can ring 0845 606 6067 and ask the operator to enter your details for you. Alternatively you can ask your driving instructor to do it if they have web access.
What is the point of registering on the website?
It enables us to keep track of those who intend to take Pass Plus, and those who have completed the course. We can then check (at random) to make sure you have received the discount, were satisfied with your course - and whether you feel it has been beneficial.
