Suffolk High Schools Experience 'a2om' 11th Jan 2010
Students at High Schools in Suffolk are reaping the rewards of a new internet experience in pre-driver training via a2om’s e-learning software.
Suffolk County Council is making a2om’s software available to young people who are preparing to take driving lessons. There are a series of internet based modules, designed to be used from the age of 16. Each module takes approximately 30 minutes and are a valuable pre-driver training tool, as well as the foundation for an Edexcel qualification, the a2om BTEC in Driving Science.
The units cover a diverse range of subjects including “attitude and alertness”, “overtaking”, “driving in poor conditions” and “risk management”. Units can be completed either during school study time, during non-lesson time or at home. The aim is to instil a positive attitude to driving safety through an understanding of their own risk management.
Road safety officers introduced a2om’s e-learning software into nine High Schools during the Autumn term last year. The response from teachers and students has been overwhelmingly positive.
It is hoped to extend this programme to all High Schools in the county during 2010 so that young people as both drivers and passengers, are well prepared for their driving experience.
Drivers aged 17 to 21 account for 16% of the driving population in Suffolk but they are involved in 34% of serious injury and fatal accidents. It makes sense to give them every opportunity to become safe, responsible road users.
Road safety officers are available to visit schools and give demonstrations of ‘a2om’s e-learning software’ to staff and students.
