The Essential Guide to Completing a School Travel Plan

1. Set up a working group (try sending a letter to parents, school neighbours, local Police officer, local councillors etc). Tell everyone affected what you are doing and trying to achieve.

2 Send out survey forms to pupils, parents and staff.

Send a letter to your parish council and school neighbours telling them what you are doing and asking for their support & views on the matter.

3. Collate and analyse the results of the surveys.

4. Make contact with people who may be able to provide advice or support on relevant matters (eg highways officers, Police, road safety officers).

5. Decide what actions and paths of enquiry the working group thinks should be taken (does your plan have a particular focus?) The survey results and any other findings will help with this.

6. Discuss the findings of your surveys and investigations with your School Travel Plan Adviser - they will help you to set objectives and targets for your action plan.

7. Fill in the template, remembering that all of the essential criteria must completed.

8. Your draft plan will be checked by your School Travel Plan Adviser and feedback provided.

9. The final copy of your plan must be submitted by the agreed date, including signatures, for submission to the DfES & DfT.
