The Annual School Travel Survey
Every October Suffolk County Council Road Safety Team asks schools in the county to take part in the annual travel survey. This is carried out in the first week of October and started in 1999. It is a voluntary hands-up survey in which pupils are asked how they normally travel to school (for 3 or more days per week), the data is collected by class and the forms returned to the Road Safety Team.
The data is analysed and used primarily to report back to the Department for Transport and the DCFS on targets to reduce car use, as set in the Local Transport Plan Local Area Agreement 2007 and the School Travel Plan Strategy. Schools also use the results when writing their Travel Plans to see how their schools have performed in the past.
This graph shows the survey results from 1999 to 2005. Prior to 2003 the survey was carried out bi-annually.

The next page shows how schools could use the results from the annual travel surveys in school to link in with lessons and travel awareness.
