Cyclist training
Suffolk Young Cyclist Training Course
Cycling safely on the road requires a good knowledge of signalling, road position, road signs and observation skills. We want children to be safe whilst using the road and have developed the Suffolk Young Cyclist Training Course to provide children with this knowledge and skill. It is run by adult volunteers in participating primary, junior and middle schools for children between the age of 9 - 11 and is generally administered by the local authority. All adult volunteers are trained by the Road Safety team to cascade the course to the children involved.
The Suffolk Young Cyclist Training Course:
• helps to develop observation and manoeuvrability skills;
• introduces the Highway Code for Young Road Users and teaches the importance of cycle maintenance and hazard awareness; and
• provides information and advice on being conspicuous and wearing protective headgear.
• signs and road markings are explained;
Bicycle checks
To attend the course, children must be able to ride a bicycle without help and the bicycle needs to be in roadworthy condition.
The course takes about 6 hours to complete. Enquiries should be made at your school to see if and when the course is running.
Some leisure centres run courses during the school holidays.
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) has issued guidelines for the management and operation of practical cyclist training schemes. This course follows those guidelines.
