Cyclist training - FAQs
What is the difference between the Suffolk Young Cyclist Course and the National Standards Bikeability course? The Suffolk Young Cyclist Training Scheme is comparable to levels 1 and 2 of the National Standards in terms of content and expectation; however there are differences in its delivery that will cause a significant change to how we deliver the training.
The National Standards model requires that there are 2 members of staff, each of whom must be accredited National Standards Cyclist Trainers. We cannot use volunteer helpers for Level 2 training
The National Standards Course combined Level 1 and Level 2 can be run for children in Y5, Y6 or Y7.
The Suffolk Young Cyclist Training Course is a 6 hour course. The National Standards course, using 2 trainers for 12 trainees, is 8 hours.
Why can't my school do Bikeability?
As part of the East Region ITO (Independent Training Organisation) the Suffolk County Council Road Safety team’s National Standards Instructor Trainers aim to run a t least one National Standard Instructor course annually. There is a 2 day assistant course being launched at the moment.

Does this mean the Suffolk Young Cyclist Scheme is a lesser scheme? No. The Suffolk scheme works at levels 1 and 2 of the National Standard and we are happy that it is a good scheme.
So why are we changing to Bikeability?
Currently the DfT are funding National Standards Level 2 training. This means that we can employ accredited trainers to run the courses and schools no longer have to co-ordinate the recruitment of volunteers, use teaching assistant and staff time, allowing for less disturbance within the school.
Offering National Standards Bikeability training means that we can train more cyclists to be safer, more independent and fitter.
Can I train to be a cyclist trainer?
Yes you can! With the amount of cycling promotion at the moment it could well be a good move, too!
All the Suffolk County Council Cyclist Training team have completed this qualification, having taken the 4 day course. There is a 1 day assistant course being launched at the moment.
At this point we are not allowed to train the volunteers ourselves as the training must be through registered sources. We can, however, look to arrange courses for those who are interested. Contact us for details.
