National Speed Awareness Courses
A partnership between Suffolk Constabulary and Suffolk County Council
Some speeding drivers in Suffolk will be offered the opportunity to attend a National Speed Awareness Course as an alternative to three penalty points and a £60 fine or attending court. Not all drivers will be eligible for the scheme.
The courses are an opportunity for drivers to receive help and advice for speed limit awareness. The one-day course, costing £105, will last for six hours and include a theory workshop of 2.5 hours and a practical driving session lasting 3 hours.
The aim of the course is to modify the behaviour of people who speed and to help drivers develop a personal speed awareness strategy so as to avoid future lapses.
The scheme is self-financing and is managed by the County Council's road safety team along with a group of specially selected and trained approved driving instructors. Courses are run to a national syllabus.
A national steering group including the Department for Transport, the Association of Chief Police Officers, the Association of National Driver Improvement Service Providers and the Home Office governs the Speed Awareness Scheme.
